Use a Grow Tent to Improve Germination and Speed Plant Growth

If you are trying to start your own seeds, you might have discovered some of the challenges in this project. One issue that has to be dealt with is appropriate air and soil temperatures for germination to occur. The other is adequate light, and a third is sufficient moisture. If all of these areas are at suitable levels, you will have a better chance of your seed having a higher germination rate. If any of these three are missing or at too low a level, however, you will not get any germination from the seed at all. What many growers do to take the guesswork out of seed starting is to use a grow tent, also known as a grow closet.

Grow tents essentially work like a perfect little room especially suited to starting seeds. Better grow tents have a reflective inner lining, which helps to spread the light around the entire grow tent and plants held therein.

A great grow closet should feature a black-colored material for the outer layer. This is important, because black absorbs heat and helps to heat up the interior of the grow tent. Depending on the type of seed you are trying to germinate, it needs a particular soil and air temperature in order to achieve germination. You can find out specific temperature needs for seed germination from your local county extension office. Some seeds, such as peas, prefer a cooler temperature for germination, while others, such as tomatoes, eggplant, basil and sweet or hot peppers require much higher heat in order for germination to occur. You can place a thermometer inside your grow closet and make adjustments to the lights and grow heat mats in order to bring the internal temperature to exactly what your seeds need for optimal germination conditions.

Of course, the lining and exterior covering of a grow room tent need a frame from which to hang. You will want to find a grow tent that comes with heavy steel tubing for strength and durability. It is also easier to access the grow closet if it is made with heavy-duty zippers that will not snag and break easily.

Air circulation is also a consideration in a grow room tent. You will want to look for duct flanges and the ability to add an exhaust fan and filter to your unit, in order to provide appropriate air circulation to reduce soil-borne diseases that can rapidly spread in a moist, closed-off environment.

All of these features are available in the best-quality grow tent styles.

Beading Projects For Fun and Profit – Part III

One challenge faced by many hobbyists who want to turn their beading projects profitable lies in producing your designs in sufficient quantity to produce sustainable profits. This is especially true if your preference for beading projects runs to necklace/bracelet making, as these typically take longer to produce. This article will focus on things you can do to maximize your productivity, and thus, your profit potential.

The first, best thing you can do to boost your productivity is not to go overboard with the number of bead craft designs you want to offer. So many bead crafters want to undertake dozens of different beading projects in order to produce a staggering array of choices for their customers, and while that is commendable, it gets increasingly more difficult to stay organized, the more bead craft projects you have “on the table.” Best to start with no more than 4-6 designs and slowly introduce more as your level of success increases.

From a pure production standpoint, if you’re making necklaces and or bracelets, few things will help your speed more than a bead tray. At under ten dollars, this is simply a must have! It greatly simplifies the bead craft process as you can completely lay out all the materials for your beading project, double check to ensure everything is how you want it, and then it’s literally as simple as picking up the already organized pieces and stringing them together.

If you have children and or an understanding, helpful spouse, these can be enlisted to assist with the production of your various beading projects. Even one “bead night” a week can dramatically enhance your total output.

Likewise, if you have a neighbor or friends who want to learn the art of bead craft, offer to teach them in exchange for a couple hours a week assisting with your for profit beading projects.

If you have an established line of profitable bead craft projects and you’re finding it difficult to keep up with demand, you may want to consider putting feelers out for “contract beaders.” As around to see if anyone might be interested in executing some bead craft projects for you in exchange for half the profits for the items they produce. If you find yourself balking at this idea, remember that Michelangelo didn’t produce his vast body of work himself. He had dozens and often scores of apprentices working under him, and he would merely supervise the work. His vision, brought to life with the helping hands of others, and you can make use of that very same principle in your for profit bead craft projects.

There are a number of ways you can increase productivity when it comes to your bead craft projects. Some things you can do entirely on your own, but don’t be afraid to ask for, or even pay for help if you find yourself unable to keep pace with demand. Remember, if your goal is to create a line of profitable bead craft projects and you find yourself in the position of having to seek help, this is a happy dilemma!

Starting a Home Herb Garden

Starting an herb garden is an exciting activity. Herbs have a rich history and have been referenced in many ancient documents, showing that herbs have been used by most household throughout history. Herbs are easily grown inside in containers or in an outdoor garden. Growing herbs has many benefits: as an addition to dishes to enhance flavor, to make tea, potpourri, or for medical purposes, and also to keep pests in check in outside gardens. There are a variety of herb gardens: for cooking, for medicine, ornamentals, or for multiple purposes.

Types of herb plants include, interestingly, shrubs and trees, as well as annual and perennial plants. A short explanation of these types: annual plants live for one year: they sprout, flower, and die in the same year. Perennial plants live for two years, meaning that after growing and blooming during spring and summer, they die back during fall and winter and return again in the spring.

A key to herb gardens is using soil with good drainage. For compacted or heavy soil types, adding some organic material is recommended. Fertilizers are typically not necessary. While a few herbs grow well in full shade, a sunny location is preferable, and a lot of herbs do just fine with afternoon shade. Interestingly enough, herbs are not often affected by insects or diseases, with a few exceptions: in hot and dry environments, red spider mites can be a pest for low-growing herbs. Anise, caraway, dill, and fennel may be attacked by aphids and mint can be affected by rust.

To grow an herb garden, use a small area in your garden, about 6 feet by 4 feet, which would produce enough for the needs of a small family. Using indoor planters for a home herb garden is also an option. Culinary herbs are a popular herb garden use, mainly to add enhanced flavor to a dish, while other herbs are used as great colorful garnish to plates or salads. Other herbs are grown for their beautiful flowers or the aroma of their foliage.

There are two ways to start an herb garden: from seeds or from seedlings. Growing a plant from seed is a great joy, seeing the process from the beginning to the end. The majority of herbs can be started from seed. Herbs are very useful and growing an herb plant from seed is a rewarding experience. Well-drained, light soil should be used to grow seeds in. Plant seeds in a shallow box or pot toward the end of winter. The seeds should not be covered with too much soil since they do not have a deep root base. A rule to follow is: sow fine seeds in shallow soil. In the springtime, the seedlings can be transplanted to the outdoor garden. Some herbs will not thrive if transplanted, such as fennel, coriander, dill and anise and should be planted directly in the garden.

A home herb garden is particularly worthwhile and it is easy to grow. Having a good understanding of herbs and a lot of plant growing information available is important. This article is a good start and now it’s a good time to complete the journey with more information. You can find all of the knowledge you need here – enjoy!

Tips on Looking for Unique Christmas Gifts

Christmas season is a few months away and you can just see the long list of people that you have to buy gifts to. Although it is not all that hard to shop for gifts, the yuletide season makes it harder because of the added pressure of giving something that you have not given before. With Christmas rearing its cheery head every year, it is sometimes not surprising that you will run out of gift ideas for your loved ones.

And with everybody giving gifts during Christmas season, it is not uncommon to give something that your loved one already has. It may not even be surprising to give the same gift that another has given.

The quest for a unique gift this Christmas season can be really frustrating. Still, finding a gift that will really stand out is not impossible. Here are some tips that ca help you find the perfect gift that nobody will think of!

1. Make it yourself!

One way to make your gift really unique is to make it yourself! That way, you can be sure that your gift will be original. Gifts to people that are really close to you need not be the really expensive ones. You just have to think of something that they will really appreciate. Sometimes, the simplest gift can be memorable if it is well-thought of.

Examples of gifts that you can make yourself are scarves and sweaters that you can crochet, cards that you can draw, Christmas decorations especially tree trimmings that you can easily construct. There are hundreds of gifts that you can make. Just add some imagination, creativity and of course time.

2. Personalize it.

Giving something as mundane as a handkerchief or a T-shirt can be turned into something really unique if you choose to add some personal touches to it. For instance, with handkerchiefs, you can have it monogrammed while T-shirts can be dyed or colored and drawn with fabric paints that are available in art stores in the country.

If you do not have the time or the artistic ability to even attempt to personalize a gift, there are specialty shops in malls that can do that service for you. Another idea is to give a picture frame with a personalized photo of you together or a special picture that your receiver will appreciate. The key here is to remember something that has a special meaning for the person.

Home Party Planning Article

Holding a party at home is a good deal different from holding it at a different venue. For that party throwing Diva that you are capable of being, try to do some fabulous home party planning. A home party seems cheaper since it will save you from renting another place as your party venue but you will need to do all the regular chores like cleaning and cooking. Planning a party at home may take some time as you will not only be pleasing your guests with the party but with the house as well.

Home party planning will require you to decide on the number of visitors you will be inviting. Consider how many people your house and your budget can accommodate. Be careful with invitations because usually, each invite ends up as group invite. You need to anticipate that any of your invited guests could bring a few companions. So be realistic with the number of guests you want to come. Make a guest list and estimate how much money you can afford for a particular number of people. This is very important especially if you have contracted an outside food caterer or the menu is complicated.

Party success does not depend on how much you can afford to spend. Party success is highly influenced by your ability to make your home party planning suit your budget and your lifestyle. A good host is the one who is able to allot a budget fit for the event. Caviar and champagne don’t always have to be available in every home party to make it a success. For the novice in party planning, you need to decide on how much you are willing to spend. From the amount, subtract 15% as buffer to cost overrun. The result is what you call the party budget. According to party experts, this computation is the safest way to deal with unexpected slip ups.?/p>

Planning a party at home also considers that the event stages not just you as a host but also your home as the venue. Home party planning requires you to assess the things you might use in your house. Count the glasses, platters, chairs, tables and linen. Consider little details like placing scented candles and toilet paper in the bathroom or having a box for feminine hygiene essentials.

Partying at home does not mean you don’t have to enjoy anymore. Home party planning ends the moment the party kicks off. Let your visitors feel that they are with a party host and not with someone who is trying so hard to make an impression of a good wife and a mother. Let go of the chores for a while and savor what you have planned for.

Ten Great Uses of Pumpkins

When we think about pumpkins, we think about Halloween, Jack-O-Lanterns, pumpkin pie, and possibly Thanksgiving. But, the truth is, there are plenty of ways to use a pumpkin! During October, pumpkins are abundant. Sometimes, they are too abundant. And it’s not uncommon to see excess pumpkins cast aside or left to rot after Halloween, but there’s really no need to let the extras go to waste. The following are just a few of the great uses for pumpkins:

1. Pumpkins in Recipes As food, pumpkins are low in calories, yet high in Vitamin A, Vitamin C, protein, and potassium. Pull out your favorite cookbook and search for recipes containing pumpkin. Pumpkin breads, pumpkin pies, and muffins are favorites, but you can probably find plenty of others. As an impromptu house guest in Paris, I was once served an incredible pumpkin soup (though I never completed my search for that particular). There are more exotic recipes to try as well – pumpkin juice, pumpkin ice cream, and even fried pumpkin.

2. Pumpkin Seeds Pumpkin seeds (also called “pepitas”) are also known to be highly nutritious, and are used in weight-loss diets. They provide fiber, healthy fats, and protein, as well as such minerals as magnesium, manganese, zinc, iron, and copper. They are also known to strengthen the immune system, and to be good for people with high cholesterol. Roasted pumpkin seeds make excellent snacks between meals, can be sprinkled over a holiday squash soup, and are a favorite in Mexican cooking. Candied pumpkin seeds are great for parties as well – and even your children might accept them among their Halloween candy.

3. Pumpkin for Pets Mashed pumpkin is a great remedy for digestive trouble in dogs. It can be used to combat weight gain or diarrhea, and for resistance to infections. It’s also said to be good for a dog’s night vision and general health. Simply add a few spoons of cooked and mashed pumpkin to your dog’s food. (Important: it must be pure mashed pumpkin, not a mix!) For instructions on how to create your own mashed pumpkin, see #4 below. Cats might like pumpkin as well, and it can be given to help cats with similar digestive troubles, as well as hairballs. Remember, if your pet is sick, take him to the vet! Also, ask your vet about using pumpkin for a home remedy.

4. Saving Pumpkins for Later When there are more pumpkins than you know what to do with, you can save them for later use in recipes and for winter holidays. There are several ways to create pumpkin puree which can be frozen for later use. The following are three preparation methods:

1. Baking – Cut the pumpkin into two halves, place it on a baking sheet {with the flat side down}, and bake it at 350 degrees Fahrenheit, for about an hour, or until it is tender when tested with a fork.
2. Microwave – Follow the above procedure, but instead of placing the pumpkin in an oven, microwave it on high for about 15 minutes, or until it is tender.
3. Boiling – Cut the pumpkin into large chunks and then rinse. Then, place the chunks in a pot, cover with water (fully immersing the pumpkins, while leaving one inch of water on top), and boil until tender. Once you’ve used one of the methods above to soften the pumpkin, cool it off, peel it, and mash it in a food processor. You can also use a potato masher or other similar device. Then, simply close the puree in zip lock bags, or whatever is convenient, and freeze it for for the winter. The puree can be used as a substitute for canned pumpkin, in any recipe.

5. Pumpkins as Dishes You can clean a pumpkin well, cut it in half, and dry it for use as a serving bowl or a flower vase. You can also use a halved pumpkin to cook or bake other foods in.

6. Pumpkins for the Skin Pumpkins contain anti-oxidants and alpha-hydroxy, which are said to be good for the skin. You can use pumpkin peels as a facial, to combat aging or other skin problems.

7. Pumpkins for Children and Games You can use pumpkins for children’s drawing and carving contests. If your kids are too little to start carving yet, they can also decorate pumpkins with markers or paint – or even create a pumpkin collage. Another use of pumpkins is as targets for archery practice. We definitely don’t recommend any games that involve throwing pumpkins, nor using them as substitutes for soccer balls. Possibly even better, how about a cross between a Jack-O-Lantern, a Snow Man, and a Scare Crow? Your kids might have a great time making a Pumpkin Man – and it’s much better for them than watching TV.

8. Pumpkins as Ornaments Pumpkins, gourds, and squash can be used to create candle holders, Thanksgiving centerpieces, and other ornaments.

9. Musical Pumpkins Yes, that’s right, pumpkins make great musical instruments as well. Or, at least they can if you know how to make (and play) them. You can find a variety of ideas for instruments that can be made from gourds, squashes, and pumpkins. Although many musical instruments are made from gourds, one can easily imagine how a large or small pumpkin would do just as well in many cases.

10. Pumpkins for Crafts If you are an experienced craftsman or a devout hobbyist, you might try some more creative and advanced uses of pumpkins. You can make pumpkin leather like the American Indians did, or just settle with a simple pumpkin bird house. As you can see, there’s really no need for pumpkins to go to waste, either before Halloween or afterwards. During economic recessions, it’s not uncommon that people have more time on their hands than they have money. Instead of letting extra pumpkins go to waste, the above are a few ways to stretch your grocery budget a bit further, invest some time in your health, get your kids away from the screen, and have some fun at the same time.

Easy to Make Bucket Garden and Compost Box Ideas

Backyard Gardens are popping all over the country, as people look for ways to save money and grow fresh food. A cheap bucket garden is simple and can be very inexpensive way to get started… Essentially, a small bucket garden can be created with little to no expense. Whether it is a tin garden bucket, plastic garbage can or old cardboard box, any container you come across can fulfill the basic requirements and act as a container for your garden. When deciding to begin your bucket garden, it is more important to spend your money to get the best bang for your buck; seed, plants and potting soil etc.

Your container garden can be made up from literally anything that constitutes a box, pot or container that you have lying around that can hold soil and your vegetable crops. A plastic 5 gallon bucket used to grow your vegetables and herbs can be very beneficial in several ways:

1. One of the benefits of a container garden is its portability. If you live in a home that does not provide optimal conditions for a stationary garden, bucket gardens can provide the flexibility you need.

2. A bucket garden is a little tougher for animals to access and can be surrounded by fencing if needed. Because bucket gardens stand a foot or 2 above ground, they are more difficult for bunnies and other intruders to get to.

3. If you live in a condo or apartment, access to a private plot of land to grow vegetables may not be available. The large 5 gallon container can provide a small area for you to have your own piece of land for the herbs and vegetables you desire.

4. Plastic 5 gallon buckets are durable and can be used to hold multiple crops. A Pizza Bucket could contain grow basil, onion, and a tomato plant. Everything you need to add to a fresh pizza when ready for harvesting. A great project for your young one to get them involved in gardening.

Some of the easiest ways to get started are listed below when thinking about your own garden projects:

How to make a hanging Bucket Planter for the price of a cup of coffee – A hanging bucket planter is easy to make for growing upside down tomatoes. You do not need fancy infomercials to grow a tomato upside down and can be made in 10 minutes with a standard bucket.

How to find items in your shed or garage to make a bucket garden planter – Your garage or shed is a great source for buckets and containers items that are just lying around. You can have some great containers already stacked up in a corner somewhere that would work well in the garden.

Make a Free Standing Bucket planter – A free standing bucket planter can easily be made from empty 2 liter soda bottles you use every day. Cutoff the bottom, attach to a free standing pole, add some soil and you are ready to grow some herbs or other plants like jalapeno peppers.

How to make simple compost bin – Every bucket garden needs a source of rich compost. Making a free compost box from discarded pallets is one way to go. In less than 30 minutes you can have your own compost box. You can also make a compost Bin from a simple trash can. If you have a large trash can lying around, it is easy to turn it into a compost bin in less than 5 minutes. Self contained and ready to go to hold your grass clippings, rotting leaves and kitchen scraps.

Most organic material can be added to your compost to create "black gold". Stinky rotten vegetables are your best items to assist in the decomposition process. However, there are things that should not go into your compost bin. Items like meat, bones and dog feces are taboo items to put into your compost. These things can bring unwanted pests into your yard and cause unnecessary issues.

In summary, making a bucket garden is easy and very inexpensive. You can create it from existing materials lying in your shed or garage and along with a simple compost bin, you can grow awesome vegetables for your table.

Soil Tools That Are Essential For Gardening

Once you have decided to plant a garden there are some soil tools that are essential for gardening. You will also have to figure out where in the yard it is going to exist, of course this all depends on the size of your property, either close to the house or way in the back. How large do you want this garden to be? Is it going to be in the ground or in a raised bed? It is best to figure all that out first and then stake out the area. You will need a sharp spade, garden fork, shovel, a level-headed rake, a trowel, a hoe, a cultivator, and of course a garden hose. These are the soil tools that are essential for gardening you will need for working the soil.

First you want to spade the edges of your garden bed, use a garden fork and cultivator to loosen up the surface of the soil and a garden fork again to loosen the subsoil. You next want to mix all your amendments into the soil bed with the fork and then the shaping and grading with the level-headed rake. A shovel would be handy for digging holes, but the spade will work just as easy. A trowel is good for small-scale digging and a hoe can be used to keep the weeds to a minimum. Your garden hose should be long and equipped with an adjustable nozzle.

A rotary tiller would be a good investment only if your garden bed is going to be a lot larger that a few square yards. It makes cultivating a quick and easy task. A wheelbarrow is an added accessory especially for hauling the garden amendments and for carry away rocks and debris.

Your gardening tools should not be cheap or inexpensive, as they will probably not last a long time and you will be buying more. When you purchase your soil tools try each one on for size and comfort and make sure it is well balanced. One of the most important things to look for is how the handle is joined at the working end of the tool, this is the weakest part of the tool. They should be joined with a metal strip around it for support. The cutting edges must be sharp and solid in order to perform the task at hand.

If you are a good gardener and you value your soil tools you will take good care of them. A good cleaning after each use is a necessity. A steel wool pad should remove rust spots if they are taken care of right away and not allowed to set into the metal. If you happen to hit a rock and nick your tool, a rasp can be used to smooth it out. If a screw become loosened during your working, repair it right away lest you lose the screw by still working it. When the growing season is over your garden tools need to have all the metal parts rubbed down with an oily rag. A garden tool organizer is an excellent garden accessory for winter storage.
