Prevention is better than cure, says the adage. It is based on this principle that we get the children inoculated against many diseases. It is equally important on the part of the parents to employ means to prevent a child getting injured within the house itself. There are various ways in which they can manage it.
Any sharp corner, be it on a table, a toy, or a tool, is dangerous to a child because pointed objects can cause deeper injuries in a child than in an adult. Any such projecting points within a house should be covered with corner guards or cushions. Another necessary child proofing is keeping all potentially dangerous things like medicines, lotions, chemicals, and cleaning agents firmly locked. The doors of the cabinets, in which they are kept, should be secured by child safety locks. In lower drawers and shelves, the child’s toys can be stored, so that he can get all the joy of exploring and pulling things without hurting himself.
Varieties of Safety Mechanisms
Next in the list of things to which a child should be denied access are electrical outlets. If you get the chance to design and build your own house, the best thing to do is have plug points at a height where only adults can access it. Since that choice will not always be there, use plastic covers to cover the electrical points. Different types of covers are available and it is important to check the quality of these covers since many children can be clever enough to pry open flimsier ones.
Child proofing by child safety gates is important in restricting the kiddies’ entry to unsafe areas. Of the two types of gates that are available, gates that can be screwed to the walls offer better protection. For both types of gates, quality is assured if they have a JPMA seal on it. With regard to windows, besides the window screen, there should be a safety net on a window, or a guard that prevents the window from opening out in full.
Child Proofing Needs Are Endless
Other baby risks are breakable objects on a table, especially those on smaller tables. Electrical cords, curtain cords, leaves of potted plants, are all a baby’s enemies in one form or other. He may pull at it, bite it, chew it, or entangle it with some other thing inside the room. The same goes for knobs, handles, or buttons that he can reach.
While all these are bad enough, water is an elephantine problem. Leave alone a swimming pool or a bathtub, even half a bucket of water is dangerous for a child. And bathing water temperature should never be above 120o. Proper lighting inside the home is also mandatory. In the room in which the baby is sleeping, there should be a low watt night light so that the child does not become frightened or disoriented when he wakes up.
These various child proofing measures may not be fail safe methods for preventing injuries to a child. But they do alleviate the level of risk and you can add more safety measures by observing the child. The availability of child safety equipments in the market is increasing in leaps and bounds. That will also help a lot.

More and more people are discovering that growing indoor plants is a very satisfying and rewarding hobby. And because the homes in which we now live are lighter, warmer and more or less drought free, than they used to be, there is less chance of house plants suffering from dramatic changes in temperature throughout the course of the day, or night. So a whole new range of indoor plants from across the world can now be successfully grown indoors.
This article focuses on common pests and diseases found on indoor plants.
Ants are not necessarily harmful themselves, but they can carry aphids to the softer parts of the plant. Ants are attracted to the honeydew deposited by green fly and can carry these pests from plant to plant. Your local garden centre will have a pesticide in dust form, to control ants on house plants.
Aphid or greenfly is a familiar garden pest that can move indoors. These attack the plant by sucking sap from it and depositing sticky honeydew, which in turn can attract fungus. Leaves, stems and flowers may appear distorted. The aphid’s are not only green, but can also be grey, black or yellow. As soon as you spot this pest spray the plant with pyrethrum or permethrin. If neither of these can be obtained quickly, then use soapy water and repeat spray regularly. Also soak the soil with any of the above. Remove and discard distorted growths.
Leaf Miners often attack Chrysanthemums and Cinerarias by tunnelling through leaves. They leave tell-tale wandering narrow lines, or ‘mines’ and the grubs can usually be spotted if the leaves are examined closely. Remove any affected leaves and spray the plant with a pesticide suitable for grubs.
Mealy Bugs. These are little oval bugs, covered with a white fluffy substance, they are usually found under leaves or on leaf joints. Almost any plant can be attacked causing the plant to wilt and leaves to yellow. Pick of all the bugs that you can with a tooth pick, any nests can be wiped away with soft cotton wool or a fine paintbrush soaked with methylated spirits. Spray all top growth with a suitable pesticide and examine plants regularly for reinfestation.
Red Spider Mites. Distorted and dry looking leaves are a common sign that these tiny mites are present. Look under the leaves for a fine white web. The red or pink pests are difficult to see without a magnifying glass. Prompt action is needed to stop the infestation from spreading. Badly affected leaves should be cut away, then spray the plant with a liquid derris. Repeat after 5 days and again after 10 days.
Scale Insects. These creatures are a yellowish brown colour and can be difficult to detect. They cling to the underside of leaves and are covered with a hard waxy cover. They suck sap from the plant causing it to wither. They also secrete honeydew which in turn can attract ants. Remove by scraping with a tooth pick or the top of a biro pen. Then wash the leaves with soapy water and apply a pesticide.
Thrips or thunder flies suck sap from soft foliage. They move about by jumping and leave black dots on the leaves or white spots on flowers. Remove damaged foliage and spray with liquid derris or suitable pesticide.
Part two covers Weevils, White Flies and Worms, and includes common house plant diseases.

My fellow book club members really get into the mood of each novel for our meetings. Each host creates a dinner that derives in some way from the book. When it was my turn to host the month when we read One For the Money by Janet Evanovich, I knew right away that I wanted to host a mystery dinner to keep my book club friends in suspense.
It’s no mystery why a mystery dinner is a fun idea for a special group event. People love surprises, unusual events, and things that make them laugh. You can create a mystery dinner for your book club. This article explains what a mystery dinner is and how to create one successfully.
A mystery dinner is a multi-course dinner that is served according to the selections each guest makes for each course. Each item-the entré’, other food items, silverware, and a napkin–are given different names that do not reveal their identity. Each guest selects from a menu a certain number of items for each “course” of the meal. The fun comes in when each course is served. Some of the combinations are hilarious.
For my Evanovich dinner I served the following: plums, celery & carrot sticks, salad with artichokes, bread, a fork, a spoon, water, stuffed pasta shells, meatballs, a napkin, cannoli for dessert, and a toothpick. I made a “menu” ahead of time on the computer with story-related names for each item. Each woman received a menu list and was asked to write a 1, 2, or 3 in front of each item, having four of each number for each course. It’s important to make sure each guest writes her name at the top of her menu.
To give you an idea of how to name items on the menu related to a book, for this book, the names of the items were as follows: Plum Delightful, Handcuffs in the Shower, Nova (Not Lox), Spandex Stretcher, Smith and Wesson, FAA (Fugitive Apprehension Agent), Grandma Mazur’s Madness, Ranger’s Rover, Ziggy’s Zag, Morelli’s Mix, Benito’s Busted, and New Jersey Special. I took pity on my guests and let them have wine from the start and not as a menu item.
Two of us working in the kitchen had the master list that showed what item matched each name. Plates were assembled for each person for each course. Howls of laughter and sighs of despair erupted as really odd combinations were presented such as saucy stuffed pasta shells with no utensils, no napkin, and just carrot and celery sticks-which presumably could be used to eat the pasta. Another sorry combination might be a cannoli, a toothpick, and water before getting the entree. Lucky was the woman who actually got a fork with her pasta and salad!
A mystery dinner is very fun, not just during the event, but for years to come as it is fondly recalled. Our members still remember and talk about this mystery dinner event.
When hosting your book club, why not match the genre with the activities and food of your gathering? The next time you read a mystery or other suspense novel, host a mystery dinner and treat your friends to a fun surprise.

A large proportion of babies at around six months of age start to see their milk teeth emerge. By the age of 2 1/2 the majority of all 20 of your baby’s first teeth would usually have appeared. Each tooth is constituted of two sections, the Crown, which is visible within the mouth, and the root, which secures the tooth into the jawbone, concealed by the gum. The coating of the tooth is made up from enamel. This provides a strong and robust protection for the Crown and also provides a strong plate for chewing. Given the enamel has not formed to its fall capacity during the early stages, the addition of calcium and other minerals are essential between six and 12 months to ensure it is strengthened.
The minerals required to strengthen the enamel are located within the saliva and plaque in your child’s mouth and under ordinary circumstances will gradually accumulate upon the teeth. The problem is however that the calcium and phosphate contained within the compound of the enamel, regularly come under attack from harmful acids that are manufactured by the bacteria residing in plaque. The bacteria utilises carbohydrates to generate the acid. You will be aware of the need for your baby to consume carbohydrates and thereby increasing the acids which is fine. However, food and drink containing significant amounts of simple sugars such as sucrose and fructose, allows for the increased manufacture of these acids which can lead to damaged teeth.
Not only the quantities of sugar your baby consumes which affects your babies teeth, but also the frequency that he or she consumes sugary food and drink. Liquids consumed slowly or even sugary foods eaten over an extended period of time, ensure the sugar content of the mouth remains high thereby ensuring the calcium and phosphates are being removed for longer and less time is available to substitute them.
Generically speaking, the lower the sugar content of drinks and food the more beneficial they are for your teeth given it is the total sugar levels, and not just the added sugars which count. It is for this reason you should not add sugars to your infants food or drinks and why it is standard practice to dilute concentrated drinks and provide it to your baby in a training cup and not in a feeding bottle.

Ever-engaged mothers eternally look for options to simplify their daily activities. It is not easy getting rid of outgrown clothes along with all of the other things your family, house, and job demands of you. An easy way of ridding yourself of baby clothes that your kids have outgrown organized is to use three boxes.
To begin with, it is of prime importance that the boxes are labeled, so that it is clear what should go in which box. It will help a lot to write something on the boxes that make them identifiable. Be sure to write the words “little Johnny’s outgrown baby clothes” on them. One box should be labeled as “give away”. Make sure you have the word “sell” written on a separate box. Now, on the final box, write the words “To be tossed”. Use that throwaway box for your clothing items which cannot be fixed or have stains on them, but donate other clothing.
Those old baby clothes should be organized now! Go through the collection of clothes quickly. First instincts are mostly right anytime. Place each item in a logical box or bin. Check to see if the clothes are new and have not been worn. Consigning them to the “sell” list would be a fine option. If they are no longer going to be worn, but are still in decent shape, then these are the clothes for the “donation” box. Is that a big yogurt stain on that bib? Just put it directly into the ‘”to be tossed” box. Throw out the last box, putting it next to the trash and recycling bins. Instead of discarding away all those clothes to the garbage dump, it is quite likely that somebody might find them worth using and might pick up the box they are put in. They may even have a use for them for pets’ bedding etc.
After the separating is finished, you should take the boxes or bins into the garage or car. If a certain person can utilize the “free” box, just bring it directly to them. If that isn’t the case, then it’s time for you and the box to take a trip down to your neighborhood thrift store. You should immediately begin trying to get rid of your “sell items” on web sites or trading spots in your area. There are consignment stores in some towns where you can sell your old baby clothes. Those stores have two options of either store credit or cash against clothes brought in by the moms. For trash day put the “throw away” box out at your curb. If you want to get rid of some items, place them into a box labeled “free” and it will soon be taken.
